Amy Turner is a Tottenham Hotspur defender, and a Planet League Ambassador. She was born in Sheffield and has played for Manchester United, Liverpool, Lincoln Ladies, Notts County, Sheffield, Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers Belles and Orlando Pride. She has also played for the England national team.

Amy is passionate about biodiversity and nature, plastic pollution, fast fashion and  educating and inspiring the next generation to connect with the climate.

Theo Walcott and Planet League featured in Sky Sports Series

 and Planet League are working together to address sustainability issues that surround us by creating the Basketball For Good Cup.

A seminar was hosted by both entities on June 15th, where the European Youth Leaders were taught the objectives and purpose of the Basketball For Good Cup. This workshop served as a catalyst for change, to launch the project.

The Cup is a seven-week climate action tournament commencing on June 30th. It will engage the Foundation’s Youth Leaders during the summer and run through the European Youth Championships held in each of their respective countries.

The aim behind the creation of this cup is to demonstrate the potential of engaging basketball supporters in sustainable living through the platform using the power of competition. It aims to see the power and universal language of basketball to unite people to address ecological challenges.

Youth Leaders will participate themselves, taking green actions to accumulate green points and climb a league table, whilst also engaging the participants of the events across Europe in joining, taking action, and scoring points too.

Actions include things that can be done during the European Youth Championship events, but also beyond them into everyday lives, and range across areas like travel, food, energy, waste, outdoors, and more. Participants upload a photo of them taking the green action to the platform, available at 

, to score points and climb the league table, with prizes up for grabs!

Planet League and FIBA Foundation launch the first-ever Basketball For Good Cup

In April 2023 Southampton FC teamed up with their energy sponsors Utilta to run the Saints Planet League - a tournament to find the greenest Southampton fan. It was the first time one of our tournaments brought together a club and one of its commercial partners.

Southampton have been real pioneers on football club sustainability - they launched their 

 programme in 2020 to give a proper framework to sustainability action, rather than just taking ad hoc measures.

Their projects have included measures to cut single-use plastic, promoting park and ride and car-free transport, a tree-planting initiative called Home Grown, beach cleaning and taking part in Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s Team Wilder project to promote biodiversity, and running a “greener game” around the match v Arsenal on Earth Day 2022. As well as taking part in several Planet League tournaments and Green Football Weekend!

Saints Planet League Cup and Theo Walcott

Funzo Ojo is a Port Vale midfielder and vice-captain, and a Planet League ambassador. He moved to the UK from his native Belgium in 2017. He played for Scunthorpe, Aberdeen and Wigan and is now at Port Vale.

He’s a bit of a climate nut - led the charge for Port Vale in this year’s Green Football Weekend, completing 260 actions and saving 500kg. Sterling work for a few weeks of dedicated greenery. That was February.

That’s what it takes to be a professional footballer: focus and dedication, right? Ok, and talent and so on.

Actually, like living greener. You’ve got to stick at it, work at it. You’re not a Messi overnight, you’re not a Greta overnight (even if you want to be one).

We were over the moon when Funzo agreed to be a Planet League ambassador. He’s going to help us get the word out, while setting an example to his fans and bugging his teammates to trade down their cars to bikes 🙂

We asked him where he got the climate bug from. He said:

“I have always been fascinated by recycling ever since my mum explained it to me when i was younger. As I got older I started looking more into what actually happens when we do recycle and when we don’t and what the effects of those actions are.

“The Earth is beautiful but more and more we see and feel the effects of climate change. I believe if we all get a bit more knowledgeable and do our best to protect it we can make a change."

Swansea City FC Head Coach, Russell Martin, is joining as Planet League’s latest ambassador.

Former Scottish international, Russell is passionate about sustainability. He’s spoken on 

 about plastic usage, electric car chargers and his family’s attempts to be more sustainable at home. Russell used to play for Wycombe, Peterborough, Norwich City, Walsall and MK Dons. Now he’s the manager of Swansea City, currently sitting in the top half of the Championship. He’s actually the second youngest Championship manager after Vincent Kompany!He told us: “I’ve long championed the need for football to play its part in helping to tackle the climate emergency, so I’m delighted to be a Planet League Ambassador.” 

 will promote Planet League projects across schools in and around the Sussex area. “It’s a great and practical way for schools to get involved in what is such a vital issue and I’m looking forward to seeing the schools that we work with across Sussex take part and compete to be the greenest!” At Planet League we are really chuffed to be able to work with Russell and his Foundation to promote sustainable living to football fans. It’s really fantastic to be able to work with someone who is so ahead of the game on sustainability.

The cobblers nailed it. After several tournaments where they were sooo close, this time they nailed it with a resounding win.

Winning the first three weeks on the trot gave them an unassailable lead … and even though Man Utd Foundation’s rearguard action won them the last two weeks handsomely … it wasn’t quite enough to wind back Northampton’s lead. So Northampton were top with 167 points, United second with 158 points.

Lincoln City (130) and West Ham (129) came third and fourth respectively.

Over 74,000 activities were completed by fans in the five-week tournament preventing 169 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Northampton-born comedian, Alan Carr, recorded a video message to celebrate the victory: “Well done to Northampton Town, all their supporters and all the local schools who are doing their best to tackle climate change, and also for winning Planet League, well done you! Up the Cobblers.” We’re really chuffed that a top comedian gave Northampton Town a shout-out.

Huge congratulations to Northampton Town and their fans for lifting the Planet League trophy. From hosting a green game and getting their players involved to their incredible schools and community engagement they have shown the power of football for doing good for the planet. 

And a special word for Damon Fox at Northampton Town Community Trust who showed amazing leadership and dedication to get Town … over the line.”

The nomination was for our Cup26 campaign. Cup26 leverages the competitive spirit of football, bringing together club and community to raise awareness and show fans how fun and easy it can be to take climate action. Cup26 provided a platform for the football community's actions and voices to be seen and heard at COP26.

We bumped into a question which didn’t have an answer to. So we made up our own answer.

In the world of carbon emissions accounting (wake me up when you are done, please) different emissions are grouped into “scopes”. There are scopes 1, scope 2 and scope 3. Still with us? Ok, scope 1 emissions are ones caused directly by an organisation - like the emissions from running a boiler or operating your car fleet. Scope 2 emissions are the emissions from the electricity you buy - they don’t happen at your own site, but happen down the road at the power station you get power from. And scope 3 emissions are the ones caused by customers in the use of the product. So fans travelling to games is the big one. Actually that makes up the big majority of clubs’ carbon footprints.

What we asked was: Hold on, if a club can encourage its fans to do green stuff at home, like saving energy or switching to renewable energy, what “scope” does that fall under? It’s neither scope 1, nor 2 nor 3.

So whenever a club does something to encourage its fans to live greener, it’s affecting its scope F emissions. And that can be a big number - a reduction in emissions - if it can reach lots and lots of fans and encourage them to do good stuff.

We also discovered a cool thing. It turns out that the positive effect a club can have for the planet is much bigger by engaging fans than by tweaking its own operations. But you need those operational improvements, because if you aren’t getting your own house in order, fans aren’t going to do their stuff for the club.

The other good thing is it looks like clubs’ sponsors like the idea and are ready to support clubs engaging fans. It worked with the Saints Planet League Cup. Hopefully there’s more to come.

November 2021 - After weeks of feverish competition up and down the UK between 49 football clubs, Cambridge United earned a hard fought victory over eight other finalists to become the inaugural CUP26 champions, winning football’s biggest-ever climate tournament as the COP26 climate summit gets into full swing.

In a final full of fan action, Cambridge United proved too strong for the other finalists, including Arsenal, Fulham, Spurs and Aston Villa.

CUP26 was an eight week tournament that saw incredible support from thousands of fans, families and schools completing a series of climate actions to score goals for their team and protect the planet at the same time.

At the award ceremony on the fringes of COP26 in Glasgow, ex England player and Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King, together with Allegra Stratton, the Prime Ministers’ Spokesperson to COP26, awarded the winners trophy to Cambridge United representative Ash Dyer.

Cambridge United’s fans also won the Planet League Impact Award for having the greatest impact during CUP26. To celebrate their achievement, Planet League made a donation to Rainforest Trust UK to project an area of rainforest the size of 1,000 football pitches in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Cambridge United’s name.

Since the tournament’s launch in early September, more than 27,500 green goals were registered and verified, accounting for over 14,300 climate actions. This reduced carbon emissions by 113,000 kg and equates to planting 6,450 trees.

Video Assisted Referee? That’s not what our V.A.R. stands for. It’s Vlad Applies the Rules.


Meet Vlad Panov, aka Coach Vlad. He’s the man behind the scenes who runs our VAR system, overseeing the checking of every photo that comes in of climate action by the fans. Because, yes, we do get some cheating, especially during a head-to-head fixture when the fans of rival clubs are doing their best to win. But Vlad’s eagle eye and this team of East European bloodhounds sniff out most of the cheating.

He’s a true multinational. Grew up in Sofia, Washington DC and Budapest. Speaks five or six languages. And plays football, tennis, badminton and ping pong pretty well. True to his roots, he’s a Slavia Sofia fan.

But why is VAR important for us? We think that taking real action is important. It’s one thing to say you’ll do something for the planet, but it’s another thing actually to do it. Uploading a photo gives you a chance to prove you’ve really done your bit. But when the competition gets tough and a fixture is on a knife edge, we’ve seen that some people are … so keen to win for their club … that they bend the rules. Upload silly photos which are nothing to do with what it’s supposed to be.

Well, we clamped down on that. The goal gets disallowed. Repeat offenders: yellow card. And if it goes on, then red card and all that player’s goals are cancelled. We want to make sure it’s as fair as possible for everyone taking part.

VAR and Vlad

Summer 2021 we ran a summer tournament mainly for club community organisations holding summer camps for kids. It was a heated affair - no, not just the weather driven by climate change. But the competition between Arsenal and Burnley to see who would top the table. The score was close and Drew Tyler who headed up the Coaching For Life programme at Arsenal had an idea.

Coaching For Life is a community programme which Arsenal runs in conjunction with Save the Children. They help young people at the Za’atari Refugee Camp in Jordan who have escaped the war in Syria.

There’s no rule saying we can’t have overseas people playing for our Planet League team.

“It was a way to engage the young people on our Coaching for Life programme and help connect them to our local work and enhance their sense of belonging to our wider work and feel closer to the Arsenal community in London,” explained Drew.

Drew got them involved in some of the Planet League challenges, particularly those encouraging them and their families to get active and look after their environment by cleaning their sports pitches.

“The children in Za’atari are extremely considerate and empathetic, demonstrated recently as they wrote letters and drew pictures to send to young people, often their families, in Syria and Turkey affected by the earthquakes. It was great for the young people to consider how they can contribute individually and as a group to the environment.”

In the end, Arsenal pipped Burnley 1,104 goals to 1,071 - the Za’atari children playing a key role in the 43 goal win. We never thought Planet League would reach a refugee camp in Jordan.

Here’s the painful irony: one of the contributing causes of the war in Syria is climate change itself. Severe drought forced over a million farmers and their families from the countryside into cities, leading to unrest. Not the only cause, by far, but one of the reasons for the Za’atari Refugee Camp where over 70,000 people still live.
